Out of the blue...
In my last post I mentioned that my husband had, out of the blue, asked if we could adopt a child from Africa. His argument (with a smile) going along the lines of "I'm pale, you're red'ish, the kids are their own tints of pale and red, why not a brown one?"
Now, given that we have only been married 5 months, and I have a 10 and 15 yr old, and he has a 22 yr old daughter and 4 yr old granddaughter this might seem like a really odd statement. (and my first thought "why can't we move there instead" seem even stranger).
However, this springs from another statement he made the other day about how incredibly blessed we are. We live in a country where people rarely get tortured, beat up, have to beg for food... we have everything we need and some! Why not pay it forward?
He said he'd like to sponsor a child somewhere, give to charity. My instant reaction was "what? on top of all that we already donate each month???". And I swear, scientists could not have measured the speed with which I felt incredibly ungrateful, ignorant and STUPID. Of course we're going to give to charity to benefit a child somwhere! What on earth was I thinking???
So, his comment about adopting a child isn't really about physically adopting one. But more a case of wanting to share our abundance. Now the big question is, which charity to do it thru. I mentioned "Plan" as I seem to remember they support the community, rather than one child at a time. Which seems like a good idea. My husband has himself been to Africa and done charity work thru another organization, which I can not remember then name of right now... something Children.... And that's a whole story in it's own.
When he was a child his school was gathering donations for starving children in Africa, his mother gave him 50p to donate. He looked at the money and thought "hey, sweeties for me!", and hence pocketed it for his own benefit.
It's haunted him ever since.
So, a couple of years ago he decided to make amends. He spent £2000 to go to africa and work on water purification systems. He says it was a very humbling experience, we have so much, they have so little. We don't appreciate the abundance we have, they are extremely grateful for the little they get.
So our question now is, which charity to support? Anyone out there with experience in this feel free to share your knowledge! There are children out there that need help, and frankly, we better step up our game and help them!
Have a beautiful day everyone! Remember to breathe... *smile*
